Yorkville Man Accused of Setting Grandparents' Camper on Fire in Vienna

VIENNA, NY — What began as a routine call for assistance at a campground turned into a felony arson investigation involving family and flames.

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol, deputies were dispatched on June 30, 2025, to the Ta-Ga-Soke Campground on Higginsville Road in the Town of Vienna, where a camper was fully engulfed in flames. The fire was reported at Lot 132, and upon arrival, deputies discovered the situation was more than just an accident.

After investigating, authorities say 28-year-old Robert Bartle, of Yorkville, intentionally set fire to his grandparents' camper. The fire didn’t stop there, it spread, causing damage to two neighboring campers on Lots 131 and 133.

Given the seriousness of the incident, the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigative Unit took over the case. Bartle was taken to the Kurt B. Wyman Law Enforcement Building, where he was charged with Arson in the Third Degree, a Class C felony, and Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, a Class D felony.

He was later arraigned in Oneida County CAP Court and released on his own recognizance. Bartle is expected to appear in the Town of Vienna Court at a later date.
