UTICA, NY — Utica Police say a city resident has been charged after repeated incidents involving her 11-year-old son.
On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, members of the Patrol Division and Juvenile Aid Unit arrested 36-year-old Nurto Mohamed of Utica. She is charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child for failing to exercise due diligence in controlling her son.
According to investigators, since the start of 2025 the boy has been tied to at least four separate felony cases and numerous misdemeanors, including robbery. Earlier this month, police say he and a 12-year-old accomplice were involved in a burglary that led to damage to several vehicles. The pair allegedly stole two cars and drove them around the city, causing further damage to both property and the vehicles.
Because the child is only 11, he cannot face criminal charges under state law. After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, police say the rarely used charge against Mohamed was applied due to the repeated and escalating nature of the boy’s actions.
Authorities say Mohamed was made aware of her son’s behavior after each incident and was offered services for assistance.
Utica Police added that moving forward, similar charges may be considered in cases where parents fail to take action, though they stress this option is a last resort. The department says it hopes parents will partner with police and community providers to help ensure children make safer choices.
