UTICA, NY — A serious single-vehicle crash is under investigation in Utica. Police and fire crews responded to the scene at the intersection of Keyes Road and Herkimer Road around 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

According to a witness, the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed just before it crashed into a cement-based light pole and USPS Collection Box on the property of Fastrac. The vehicle ultimately came to a stop off the roadway across the street from Fastrac. The driver, believed to be an elderly man in his 70s, may have suffered a medical emergency moments before the crash.

Firefighters had to deploy specialized rescue tools to free the driver, who was reportedly trapped inside the wreckage. His condition has not yet been released. The vehicle sustained significant damage.

As emergency crews were on scene, westbound traffic on Herkimer Road was being redirected onto Jimmy Boulevard.
