NEW HARTFORD, NY — Fire crews responded to a working structure fire at 3734 Oxford Road shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, prompting a second alarm as flames quickly spread through the home.
Several neighboring fire departments were called in to assist. At the time of the fire, the residents were not home.
Two New Hartford firefighters were transported to Wynn Hospital for evaluation due to conditions encountered while battling the blaze.
In a tragic turn, one of the family's cats was lost in the fire. However, firefighters were able to rescue two other cats, who were turned over to Edwards Ambulance paramedics. One cat received CPR, and the other was resuscitated. Both cats have since been reunited with their family.
Oxford Road was closed between Oneida Street and Snowden Hill Road as crews worked to contain the fire. The fire was brought under control at 2:42 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
