KIRKLAND, NY — July 10, 2025 — A tragic collision on Route 5 claimed the life of a Herkimer man late Thursday morning, prompting a response from New York State Police and emergency crews.
At around 11:38 a.m., troopers were called to the scene of a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck near the intersection of French Road and Route 5 in the town of Kirkland.
According to initial reports, 78-year-old Ronald J. Jubis of Marcy was behind the wheel of a 2024 Chevrolet Colorado, attempting to make a left turn onto Route 5 heading eastbound from French Road. As he entered the intersection, a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R motorcycle driven by David A. Humphrey II, 34, of Herkimer was traveling westbound and struck the rear driver's side of the pickup truck.
Humphrey sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Jubis was taken to Wynn Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
State Police shut down a portion of the roadway as the Collision Reconstruction Unit worked to piece together the events leading up to the crash. The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities have not announced any charges or citations at this time.
Route 5 traffic was rerouted for several hours as crews cleared the scene. Witnesses or anyone with information related to the incident are encouraged to contact State Police.
