UTICA, NY — July 2, 2025 — The Utica Fire Department is making history and blazing a trail. For the first time in its 150-year existence, the department has promoted a woman to the rank of Fire Lieutenant. That honor goes to Tressa LaBella.
Lieutenant LaBella began her journey with the department in 2015, when she was appointed on August 24 and officially joined the line as a firefighter that November after completing the Utica Fire Academy. Just a year later, she became a certified paramedic, marking the first of many milestones in her career.
Beyond her fire service credentials, LaBella holds a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management and is also a Registered Nurse with an Associate’s in Nursing. She's currently advancing her education with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Known for her courage, leadership, and commitment to public service, Lieutenant LaBella’s promotion is not only a personal achievement but also a landmark moment for the entire city.
