August 6, 2025

RUSSIA, NY — A disturbing confrontation in Herkimer County has led to charges against a Cold Brook man after police say he fatally shot two dogs and threatened neighbors with a rifle.

On the evening of August 3, around 7:30 p.m., State Police responded to reports of gunfire on Norway Street in the town of Russia. Investigators say two dogs had wandered onto the property of Mark W. Boyce, 43, who claimed the animals were threatening his goats.

One dog was found dead at the scene, and the second later died at an emergency veterinary clinic.

During the incident, Boyce allegedly pointed a rifle at several individuals who were trying to help the wounded animals. No human injuries were reported.

Boyce was arrested and charged with Menacing in the Second Degree, a Class A misdemeanor. He was arraigned in Little Falls City Court and released on his own recognizance. A court appearance is scheduled for August 20 at 6 p.m. in the Town of Russia Court.
