Woman Stabbed Inside New Hartford Walmart; Suspect in Custody

UPDATE: Police have identified 37-year-old Kristopher L. Spain as the suspect taken into custody Tuesday afternoon at the New Hartford Walmart in connection with a violent incident inside the store.



Spain, who is believed to be recently homeless, is accused of committing a random, unprovoked attack on a 25-year-old female victim from the area. Spain and the victim were not acquainted, and the incident appears to be a random act of violence.



The victim, who sustained injuries from a sharp instrument, is in stable condition at Wynn Hospital.



Following his arrest, Spain was processed at the New Hartford Police Department and transported to the Oneida County Jail, where he awaits arraignment in Centralized Arraignment Court. Under the circumstances, he is not eligible for bail.



Spain was charged with the following offenses:



• Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (NYS PL 125.25), B Felony


• Assault in the First Degree (NYS PL 120.10), B Felony


• Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (NYS PL 265.02), D Felony

NEW HARTFORD, NY – November 26, 2024 – A woman was stabbed inside the Walmart store located at 4765 Commercial Drive on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a response from local emergency services. The incident, initially reported as a "Dispute in Progress," occurred around 12:20 p.m.



New Hartford Police, Edwards Ambulance, and New York Mills Fire Department arrived at the scene shortly after the 911 call was received. Several officers and detectives were seen investigating the incident at the store.



The victim was transported to Wynn Hospital by ambulance. The woman injuries were described as significant but not life-threatening.



A male suspect, who reportedly called 911 from inside the store and admitted to the stabbing, was taken into custody. He has since been led away in handcuffs before being placed in a police vehicle.
