ROME, NY — A quiet morning in Rome was shattered, quite literally, when a burglary alarm went off at Rizzo’s Market just before 4 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Officers from the Rome Police Department’s Patrol Division rushed to the scene at 401 S. James Street, where they found the front door window smashed in. According to investigators, someone had forced their way inside and fled with an unknown amount of lottery tickets.

The suspect didn’t stay anonymous for long.

By Friday, June 27, police had arrested 38-year-old James I. Sikes of Taberg. Detectives and the Street Crimes Unit tracked him down and took him into custody on a charge of Burglary in the 3rd Degree.

Sikes was brought to Rome Police Headquarters, processed, and is currently being held for arraignment in Rome City Court. The investigation into the stolen lottery tickets remains active.
