FULTONVILLE, NY — June 24, 2025 — A quiet morning in the Village of Fultonville turned chaotic Tuesday when a commercial dump truck barreled off Interstate 90, tore through a residential area, and crashed into a home, miraculously without causing any serious injuries.
At approximately 7:31 a.m., State Police responded to a major crash near mile marker 182.6 involving a 2025 Peterbilt dump truck. The truck, driven by 63-year-old Merwin W. Wells of Fort Plain, NY, was heading eastbound when Wells reportedly suffered a sudden medical episode. He described it as a severe coughing fit that caused him to briefly lose consciousness.
What happened next was nothing short of harrowing. The truck veered off the road into the median, smashed through the center guide rail, cut across all westbound lanes of traffic, and continued through another guardrail on the north side. From there, it plunged down a steep embankment, barreled through a wooded area, and slammed into the back of a house at 24 Washington Street.

The truck demolished the rear main bedroom of the residence, which was occupied at the time by a 51-year-old man and his two sons, ages 24 and 20. In a stroke of luck, none of the family members were in the impacted room when the crash occurred.
Wells sustained minor injuries and was transported to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville for treatment.
Adding to the emergency, the truck also ruptured a home heating oil tank behind the residence, causing an estimated 150-gallon oil spill. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s spill response team arrived to handle the environmental hazard.
Assisting at the scene were the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Thruway Authority personnel, and the Fonda-Fultonville Fire Department. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
